Ten million global sales for the Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris* nameplate has reached the milestone figure of ten million cumulative sales worldwide, coinciding with the 25th year of production of the core hatchback model. It is a performance which earns our super supermini a place alongside Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Hilux and Land Cruiser as an eight-figure achiever.

Since its public debut in 1999, the Yaris has been a pioneer, introducing new technologies and concepts to the compact car market. Within its first year on sale the model won Car of the Year in Japan as well as European Car of the Year (the first Toyota to win this accolade overseas). In addition, each successive generation has been shortlisted for the European Car of the Year award, with the current fourth-generation model successfully claiming the award in 2021.

The third-generation Yaris had the distinction of being the first model in its class to offer a full hybrid electric powertrain – a significant step forward in our mission to make this highly efficient technology available to as many as possible. Today, the Yaris is exclusively hybrid-powered in the UK market.

The current, fourth-generation Yaris has demonstrated its ability to adapt to changing customer needs, its family growing to include the widely acclaimed GR Yaris mega-hatch in 2020 and the high-riding Yaris Cross urban crossover SUV in 2021.

Throughout almost 25 years of production, that spirit of innovation has helped maintain the model’s status as one of Toyota’s consistently best-selling models in the UK and Europe. In 2022, Yaris models accounted for more than one third of Toyota’s total European sales. And by the end of February 2023, cumulative sales in Europe had reached 5,155,506 units, of which 715,845 were UK sales.

But as its milestone figure of ten million sales attests, the Yaris is a genuinely global model that is manufactured in sites around the world. Initial production commenced in Toyota’s Takaoka Plant, Japan, but this quickly expanded to include production bases in Brazil, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, France and the Czech Republic.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing France has produced the Yaris continuously since 2001. Its production capacity was expanded to include the Yaris Cross in 2021, while Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic has stepped up to meet high demand for this model with additional production. Engines and transmissions are supplied by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland. More than 4.6 million Yaris models have been built in Europe to the end of 2022.
